website maintenance

Can you do it yourself?

Many small businesses start their foray into the online world by having a staff member design, build and maintain their first website. While certainly convenient and initially cost-effective, there are some major drawbacks to this approach:

• most of the time the appointed staff member knows little or nothing about website design, construction and maintenance. This results in a poorly built website that doesn't scale well, doesn't attract and retain visitors and eventually becomes bloated and impossible to maintain.

• staff and their responsibilities change over time. So, the person who volunteered to build your website might now be in your accounting department and no longer has the time nor inclination to maintain the website. Perhaps they've left your company altogether and taken their knowledge with them, leaving you to find somebody else who can reverse-engineer the site that was left behind.

• a good website needs to evolve. It is not like a book or painting that is created and displayed, static, for all to see. Think of the websites that you frequent on the web. Would you still frequent them if they were exactly the same each and every time you visited them? Websites can require a significant time commitment in order to keep them current, and that commitment can be difficult to secure in a small business when staff are already stretched and multi-tasking.
